Personal Assistant for Young, Dynamic Male – Rare Opportunity           Ref: PA1/ AYR /JL

Location: Ayr, Scotland

Base Salary:  £26,000 – £28,000

Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

Rare opportunity for well-rounded, highly responsible personal care assistant to assist intelligent, motivated, active young man with co-ordination and speech impairment to independently undertake his work, sport and interests. Highly competitive salary available reflecting blend of communication, administration and personal care assistance required and need to work in partnership with young man to pursue his goals, including at times international travel.

Position is fulltime salaried role. Typical week reflects regular schedule of part time work, part time university study from home and sports training. Associated with work and sports competition, there are occasional day, overnight domestic and international trips which may include weekends. Overnights are limited and supplement paid. Hours worked managed and scheduled to recognise trips/overnights, resulting in a typical non travel week being 25 hours.

Role

Young man is 22 years old and has ataxic cerebral palsy which affects his balance, fine and gross motor skills and speech. Uses a walker. Role entails undertaking and/or assisting with tasks requiring fine motor skills or verbal communication. Requires developing good understanding of both work and sport environments, as well as young man’s thinking. Four main categories of assistance:

Personal Care – varying levels of assistance with personal care, dressing and meals dependent on location. Family home is well adapted and support intervention is reduced. When outside home much higher level of assistance is required, particularly when travelling.

Work – employed as part time (16 hours per week) project officer with an international disability sports organisation mainly working from his home office. Uses Makaton sign language or AAC communication device. Training available. Assist with interactive verbal communication and administration.

Sports Training and Competition – an international para athlete. Support to undertake aspects of his training programme and at times attend competitions.

Travel – usually undertake two international trips and two domestic trips with overnights per annum. Trips will be in relation to work or para athletics competition. Accompany and assist throughout trip.

Experience / Qualifications

Required

  • Experience in health and/or social care.
  • Full and Clean UK Driver’s License, able to comfortably drive employer’s large car.
  • Experience of international travel.

Desirable

  • Relevant Qualifications such as a HNC or HND in health and social care or related Degree.

***This position is subject to a 6 month probationary period.
