Personal Assistant / Companion  (P/T)                     Location:    Ayr 

Hours:                  18 hours per week   + Respite Short break Support

Proposed Shifts:               Monday / Wednesday / Friday (daytime)

+ Weekend evening shifts (latest finish 11pm)

Respite Short Breaks:      Overnight / weekend support

ROP:                     £10.50 per hour

Details

Personal Assistant / Companion (P/T) – required to provide companionship and support to a young woman with MELAS (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis and stroke-like episodes).

You will provide social support and companionship within the local community, ensuring her safety at all times. The young woman has been affected physically, cognitively and emotionally by her condition and she can occasionally have seizures however this is currently managed well with medication. Her sight is affected and she has a reduced mobilising abilities / can be at risk of falls so sometimes requires support when walking in certain locations i.e. when at the cinema due to poor lighting.

Continuity and consistency are very important to her.

She is a girlie girl and likes to get her nails and eyebrows done.  She enjoys the cinema, going out for meals, going shopping, going to the pub.  She also likes Arts & Crafts.

Respite would include overnight / weekend stays i.e. city breaks, coach tours, going to musicals etc.

PA must have a sense of humour, enjoy going out and have knowledge or be willing to learn about her condition.

She can sometimes have outbursts if she misunderstands something and then can be very apologetic afterward.  PA must be able to understand this and not be offended, supporting her to manage her feelings and behaviours.

She has a mobility car which you will be required to drive to take her on outings therefore applicants must be a driver aged 25 or over (for insurance purposes) with a full clean driver’s licence.

We are looking for an individual who is calm, patient and friendly.  This will be a rewarding post for someone who is willing to get to know her and build up a companionship.

**IMPORTANT:  It is essential that you have or are willing to obtain knowledge and understanding of MELAS (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis and stroke-like episodes).

Experience / Qualifications Required

Experience of providing social supporting and companionship to young Adults required.  Guidance and relevant training will be provided by the family.

Please note that the Employer may require staff to adhere to safe working practice, this may include the use of PPE ( Masks, hand gel) , as well as using Lateral Flow Testing Kits . PPE will be supplied by the employer.

***This position is subject to a 6 month probationary period.
